Girl Scout Cookie & Wine Pairing Flight

April 12, 2018 by Donna McVey

Girl Scout Cookie and Wine Pairing

What a glorious time of year when Girl Scout cookies appear. Now that most of you have acquired your stash of cookies, it’s time to get smart about consuming this annual allotment. The only thing that could make these once a year delicacies more exciting is if we pair them WITH WINE! That’s exactly what Captain’s Walk Winery has done for you. Join us for a Girl Scout Cookie & Wine Pairing Flight.  This is a unique tasting experience where you will enjoy five different wines, perfectly paired with five varieties of the Girl Scout cookies we all know and love!

This is a drop-in tasting.  Reserved ticket holders are welcome to come anytime from 3-7 pm on May 17th to enjoy their wine and cookies. The flight will consist of five, 2 oz pours of each carefully chosen Captain’s Walk wine, paired with a different Girl Scout cookie. To sweeten the event, we’ll provide recommendations on wines we offer to compliment all eight cookie varieties, preparing you to continue your tasting fun at home.

The flight will feature:

For the first pairing, we will feature our Chardonnay. Its creamy and buttery texture make it a perfect match for the delicate-tasting Shortbread cookie. Next, we have selected von Stiehl’s, our sister winery that sits along Lake Michigan, Petite Sirah. This vibrant, full-bodied wine resounds with deep layers of dark fruit flavors that pair well with the oh-so popular Thin Mints. Followed by Naughty Girl, our semi-sweet red that’s always a crowd pleaser, Naughty Girl’s intense raspberry flavors are heightened when paired with one of the newest Girl Scout Cookies, S’mores. Moving a bit sweeter, our Titletown Moscato, with a fruity effervescence, sparkles when enjoyed with Peanut Butter Patties. We finish the flight with our sweet dessert style wine, Disappearing Treasure. As the name boasts, it’s hard to keep your glass full, when paired with Caramel deLites. Both treasures will disappear in one sitting.

Captain’s Walk Winery loves Girl Scout cookies and supports the scouts who supply us with them. That is why Captain’s Walk will be donating 15% of our total sales on May 17th to The Girl Scouts of the Northwestern Great Lakes.

Tickets are $15.00 and can be reserved by calling us at 920-431-9255. Act fast; we have a limited number of tickets due to space!

Keep in mind, this is an adult only event!

Save the milk for your cereal and pair this year’s Girl Scout cookies with Captain’s Walk Wines for a perfect “adulting” experience!

Tips to Picking Your Wine

March 22, 2018 by Rayanne Racine

Picking Your Best WineWhen walking into Captain’s Walk Winery, one may at first be a bit overwhelmed at all of the delectable choices. How to possibly choose, when deciding between a double gold winner, your favorite, or something new??

It’s been proven in multiple studies, drinking wine helps eliminate stress and helps with longevity. So the question ‘Should I drink wine?’ is often an easy one. Where it gets tough is picking the wine. No matter your palate or situation, we have the wine for you!

In an effort to help you find just the right wine, we’d like to offer a few tips.

1. Ask questions. We love hearing your questions! Our tasting floor associates have great knowledge on a variety of wine whether it’s red, white, rosé or bubbly. If you would happen to stump them, PJ, our assistant winemaker isn’t too far to find.

2. What wine with what food? If you’re coming to Captain’s Walk to find a wine to pair with a food, let us know, we’d love to point out options that complement each other. A good rule of thumb is light on light and rich on rich! Our Sangiovese pairs very well with Italian tomato and cream based dishes and red meat, while our Gewurztraminer pairs well with ham, turkey, spicy Thai food and sweet spicy Caribbean food. However, when in doubt, pick our Marquette Rosé which pairs well with poultry, seafood, pork, spicy dishes, salad, Asian dishes and fresh fruit!

3. Try new things. While it may be easy to come in and grab your favorite, it’s also a great idea to sample and try something you haven’t yet had. We often make changes to our tasting guides by adding new wines, new ciders and also by bringing back special vintages. One way to be kept up to date on new wines is by following our Facebook page or checking out our events calendar for upcoming wine release parties. It all comes back to that saying your mom said, “You’ll never know, if you’ll never try.”

4. There’s always time for wine. It’s important to point out wine isn’t just great for dinner! Way before dinner, start your morning sipping on a mimosa featuring our Titletown wine. Titletown is an effervescent sparkling moscato; add as much or as little orange juice as you would like and start your day off right! After dinner we recommend enjoying a dessert wine like our port-style wine, Captain’s Mistress.

 5. You do You! At Captain’s Walk, we want to make sure you are utterly satisfied. You know what you like; we are simply there to help make your experience memorable.

We’d love to hear how you choose which wine you bring home. Leave your response in the comments!

2016 International Tasters Guild Medal Winners

May 11, 2016 by PJ Koehler

Tasters Guild Medal

The final results of the 2016 International Tasters Guild Wine Competition are in!

The 2016 International Tasters Guild Competition is a highly competitive environment: over 1,600 wines from ten countries and 36 U.S. states and provinces. Out of all of these wines, only 72 were awarded Double Gold!

Double Gold Medal Winner 2012 Cabernet SauvignonThe 2014 Captain’s White, 2013 Chardonnay, and 2015 Sauvignon Blanc were all awarded silver medals in their respective categories. What was most exciting though was the very high honor of being a part of that 4% of Double Gold winners with our own Double Gold winner: the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon!

How does a wine win the title of Double Gold?  Dana Alexander, a columnist for the publisher New York Wines, explains how the process of a wine competition is approached in the article “How a Wine Competition Works.” The author explains at length how there are different types of competitions in the wine community and how awards are given based on the individual nominations of the judges within a collective panel. Essentially, each judge gives a certain number of points based on the same facets of wine: “color, clarity, aroma, bouquet, taste, aftertaste, and overall quality.” (Alexander)

In a separate article, “What Does a Gold Medal Mean Anyway?”, columnist Greg Walter explains the impact of winning a Double Gold medal and why the award is not only a positive for the wine itself but also for the winery!

Captain’s Walk Winery can’t wait to share this fantastic wine with you the next time you come in, so make sure to ask for a sample of the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon and “taste” what all the hype is about!

This Cheese Event is Going to Be “Wheel-y” Big!

April 12, 2016 by PJ Koehler

There are things in life that just go together, like peanut butter and jelly. Or sand and surf. And don’t forget the Green and Gold! Here at Captain’s Walk Winery, the two things that really go well together are wine and cheese. We just can’t get enough of them, and we know you can’t either!

That’s why we’re excited to be bringing a unique cheese to the winery for a special event!

Where Cheese is the Champion and Wisconsin a Winner

On March 9th, the World Champion Cheese Contest came to a close with many winners from all over Wisconsin. One in particular, the Pleasant Ridge Reserve, placed 16th out of 2,955 entries! Knowing how much our customers love trying new things, we ordered an entire wheel.

Read about the Pleasant Ridge Reserve.

That’s right. We’re going to have 10 pounds of delicious, award-winning Pleasant Ridge Reserve crafted from milk only produced by grass-fed cows right here at Captain’s Walk. And it’s waiting for you to try it!

With that said, we’d like to invite you and all your cheese-loving friends to the following…

Wheel-y” Big Cheese Event!
April 23rd from Noon until 6:00 PM

We’ll be hand-slicing the Pleasant Ridge Reserve for you to sample. If you like it, we’ll slice a whole wedge off the wheel for you. Take home and enjoy with a meal, or maybe just pair it with one of our wines! Whatever you do, the only requirement is to savor it!

Somethings in life just go together. Like a good time and Captain’s Walk Winery.

Tap into Two New Beers from Ahnapee Brewery this Season

February 29, 2016 by PJ Koehler

The creator of hand-crafted beers that can now be found in our Bistro!

March brings more than just a break from dreary winter weather, it also brings a great opportunity to experience a taste of new beers. Thanks to the hard work of our sister-establishment Ahnapee Brewery, we now have two very delicious ales on tap just ready to be tapped into!

The “Fun Guy” Beer

The Fun Guy Ale is Ahnapee Brewery’s spring seasonal and just in time! Early mushroom season in the Northwoods is right around the corner.

  • a deep copper to brown color;
  • low to medium hop flavor and aroma;
  • medium bitterness (19 IBU); and
  • medium body.

The roasted malt has caramel- and chocolate-like characteristics of medium intensity. These characteristics can be found in both flavor and aroma. Malt notes are complimented by the earthy, nutty, buttery, and meaty flavors. The somewhat smoky flavors of mushrooms such as morels, porcini, lobster, and oyster enhance and round out the taste. They also explain the pun of the brew’s clever name of “Fun Guy”!

This is a Nick Calaway original that you don’t want to miss!

The “Little Soldier” Beer

The Little Soldier is an American Amber Ale named after the original Ahnapee Brewery brewmaster: Henry Schmiling. A short-statured man, Henry served in the Civil War and was brewmaster of Ahnapee from 1868 to 1886.

  • light copper to light brown color;
  • balanced caramel malt and American hops from aroma to finish;
  • medium body carries a light fruitiness;
  • medium hop bitterness (35 IBU);
  • medium flavor; and
  • medium aroma.

This ale is a truly fine American-style session beer, perfect for any occasion!

With these new beers on tap, our beer-lovers will have no problem finding something new to enjoy at Captain’s Walk Winery. So stop in and enjoy the taste of fresh beer in our cozy bistro, and don’t forget to take some home with you in one of our Anhapee Brewery growlers!
