Green Bay’s Only Winery Wins Golds at International Judging Wine Competition

Captain’s Walk Winery in downtown Green Bay just won eight awards at the 2015 Tasters Guild International wine competition. This wine competition judges wines from every corner of the world including Wisconsin! Captain’s Walk Riesling and Cuveé Trois brought home prestigious gold medals.

“The Gold Medal winning Cuvée Trois is our 3rd small batch release,” says PJ Koehler, general manager and assistant winemaker at Captain’s Walk. “It’s a blend of just three individual barrels consisting of one each Zinfandel, Primitivo, and Petite Sirah. The contemporary West Coast style blends warm notes of spice cake into supple dark fruit flavors. It’s versatile and pairs well with grilled food, Italian, game, and aged cheeses.”

Captain’s Walk Riesling is a delicate yet balanced fruit-forward wine. “Cool fermentation in one of our chilled tanks really helped to make this wine shine,” states Koehler. “The Riesling, while a bit sweeter than past Captain’s Walk vintages, is an exceptionally food friendly wine. It pairs with just about anything from poultry, fish and pork to spicy foods, salads, and Asian fare.”

Other wine competition winners Marquette Rosé (bronze) and Captain’s Mistress (silver), are both produced from Door County Marquette grapes. These wines showcase the diversity of the French hybrid grape, as one is a dry rosé and the other a brandy-fortified dessert wine.

Rounding out the medal categories are Captain’s White and Merlot with silver, and Riverside Red and Gerwurztraminer with bronze.
